Lung Cancer Service

Lung cancer is common. It is the second commonest incident cancer in men and women and the commonest cause of cancer death in both sexes in the UK.  Lung cancer accounts for 1 in 15 deaths.More people die from lung cancer than from breast, colon, ovary and pancreatic cancer combined, and approximately 400 patients are investigated and diagnosed with lung cancer within STH each year.

We are fortunate to have a well integrated, multidisciplinary lung cancer service in the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, and are the Cancer Centre for the North Trent Cancer Network.

There are 2 weekly respiratory medicine clinics devoted to lung cancer:
The Monday afternoon lung cancer clinic at RHH is preceded by the weekly multidisciplinary meeting attended by:
  • Consultant Respiratory Physicians (Drs Chris Barber, Jennifer Hill (Lead Lung Cancer Clinician) and Rod Lawson)
  • Consultant Radiologist (Dr Rob Peck)
  • Consultant Oncologists (Dr Trish Fisher and Prof Penella Woll)
  • Palliative Care Consultant (Prof Sam Ahmedzai)
  • Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon (Mr Norman Briffa)
  • Specialist Lung Cancer Nurse (Sr Helena Stanley).

In addition, trainees from all disciplines attend to learn about lung cancer. All patients suspected or known to have lung cancer are discussed in this multidisciplinary forum and management decisions planned by the team. The afternoon clinic is a parallel clinic attended by 2 of the Respiratory Physicians, Clinical Oncologist (Dr Fisher), the Palliative Care consultant and the Specialist Lung Cancer Nurse (Sr Helena Stanley).

The weekly multidisciplinary team meeting at NGH occurs at 8.15 am on Tuesday mornings and is attended by:
  • Consultant Respiratory Physicians (Dr Jennifer Hill, Dr Paul Anderson)
  • Consultant Oncologists (Dr Trish Fisher, Prof Penella Woll)
  • Consultant Thoracic Radiologists (Dr Sue Matthews, Dr Catherine Hill, Dr Matthew Bull)
  • Consultant Thoracic Surgeon (Mr W Zurek)
  • Consultant Histopathologists (Dr Kim Suvarna, Dr Yota Kitsanta, Dr Jeremy Hyde)
  • Specialist Lung Cancer Nurses (Sr Anne Clegg, Sr Paula Munro).

Both MDTs are supported by dedicated clerical staff (Cheryl Batten, Julie Key) who are responsible for ensuring that all the clinical results and x-rays are available, and for arranging patient appointments.  A pathway co-ordinator (Paulette Afflick-Anderson) has recently been appointed. As at RHH all patients suspected or known to have lung cancer are discussed and a team management decision made. Patients are seen at the weekly Wednesday morning parallel Lung Cancer Clinic attended by the Respiratory Physicians, Oncologist (Dr Trish Fisher), Palliative Care Consultant (Dr Kay Stewart) and the lung cancer nurses.

Staging investigations (including breathing tests, x-rays, CT scans, bronchoscopies and needle biopsies) are carried out at each hospital site. A mobile PET scanner attends the NGH site weekly. Patients requiring thoracic surgery are admitted to the Chesterman Wing at NGH, where nurses, physiotherapists and anaesthetists are experienced in the management of lung problems.

Chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments are delivered at Weston Park Hospital, where there is a large team of specialist nurses, radiographers, pharmacists, social workers, etc.  Treatments are tailored to the needs of the individual patients, taking into account their general health, the stage and location of their tumour. Many patients are offered a combination of different treatments, such as surgery+chemotherapy or chemotherapy+radiotherapy.  The full range of treatments for lung cancer is available in Sheffield, including hyperfractionated radiotherapy (CHART).  Treatment is given in accordance with national guidelines and the latest research evidence.  As STHFT is the Cancer Centre for the North Trent Cancer Network, patients from Barnsley, Chesterfield, Doncaster and Rotherham hospitals who require chemotherapy, radiotherapy or thoracic surgery are sent to Sheffield.

Many patients have the opportunity to participate in cutting edge research studies, as Sheffield leads the UK in recruitment to national lung cancer trials. In addition, Professor Woll leads a research team undertaking laboratory based lung cancer research in the University of Sheffield.

The subspeciality lead for Lung Cancer is Dr Jennifer Hill. Please contact her directly for further information.
