Interstitial Lung Diseases
Interstitial lung diseases are relatively common when viewed as
a group of diseases, but include a range from relatively common
conditions such as fibrosing alveolitis (CFA or idiopathic
pulmonary fibrosis) and sarcoidosis to some unusual or “orphan”
lung diseases. The interstitial lung disease service deals with
the full range of conditions and is well supported by the
necessary radiology, pathology and cardiothoracic surgical
services. We are fortunate to have all the necessary expertise
in the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust to deal
with these often very complex conditions. As a result, we
receive many referrals from other hospitals in the region as
well as directly from primary care.
There is a fortnightly respiratory medicine clinic devoted to
interstitial lung disease:
|
The Thursday morning clinic is attended by:
-
Consultant Respiratory Physician (Professor Moira Whyte)
-
Clinical Lecturer in Respiratory Medicine (Dr Roger
Thompson)
-
Respiratory Nurse Specialists (Sr Mandy Henson and Sr Jan
Brown)
-
Radiological Review is conducted with Consultant
Radiologists (Dr Rob Peck, Dr Christine Davies)
In addition, trainees from all grades in respiratory medicine
attend to learn about interstitial lung diseases

Many patients require treatment with immunosuppressive therapies
and a full treatment monitoring schedule is provided by our
nurse specialist with organisation and review of blood tests and
a helpline number for any problems that arise.
The subspeciality lead for ILD is
Professor Moira Whyte.
Please contact her directly for further
information.
